ACQUISITION OF CITIZENSHIP THROUGH A U.S. CITIZEN PARENT

Monday - Friday (excluding U.S. & Mexican holidays)

Please do not bring any electronic devices such as cell phones, PDAs, Blackberries, etc. to your appointment.

The United States Embassy and its consulates within Mexico have their own corresponding consular district.  The United States Consulate General in Matamoros accepts Claim to U.S. Citizenship applications only for residents of our consular district in the state of Tamaulipas.  Applicants living in Altamira, Ciudad Madero and Tampico must apply at the United States Embassy in Mexico City.

In certain cases, additional documents need to be presented other than the ones listed below.

  • Please fax the U.S. citizen parent's "long form" version of the U.S. birth certificate or other proof of U.S. citizenship.
  • After faxing and calling to confirm that it has been received,  please proceed to make your appointment by internet:
    http://matamoros.usconsulate.gov
  • You must apply in person.
  • Proof of parent's U.S. citizenship. Please provide one of the following documents for one or both parents: (1) original U.S. birth certificate (long detailed version) and a U.S. passport, (2) original Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization, or (3) original Consular Report of Birth Abroad.

    Abstracts, short forms or mutilated certificates cannot be accepted.    
  • Marriage certificate of the applicant's parents, if they were/are married.
  • One or both U.S. parent's current and valid government issued ID with photo.
  • Please fill out the DS-11 form.  Do not sign this form; it will be signed in front of the Consular Officer.
  • If only one of the parents is a U.S. citizen, provide proof of the parent's physical presence in the United
  • States. Please bring sufficient evidence of school transcripts, employment records, income tax returns from previous years, social security earning statements or any other evidence which shows that the U.S. parent has lived in the U.S.
  • Applicant's Mexican birth certificate.
  • Applicant's current, valid government issued ID with photo.
  • Two identical U.S. passport size photographs are required at the time of application. They must be 2 x 2 inches (5 x 5 centimeters) and in color with a white background. They should be taken in normal street
    attire, facing forward. The photos must have been taken within the last six months.

VERY IMPORTANT: PLEASE BRING ORIGINALS AND ONE SET OF PHOTOCOPIES OF EACH DOCUMENT.

The fee is $100.00 USD for each case. By law, the passport fees are non-refundable (we accept cash in U.S. dollars, Visa, MasterCard, Discover and American Express).
